The Jac is an 8-piece ensemble featuring some of New Zealand's foremost musicians from the jazz, classical and metal scenes, including members of The Troubles, the Rodger Fox Big Band, the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, and the Richter City Rebels. Drawing heavily on all of these genres and more, they perform cinematic, suite-like compositions.
The writing of Jake Baxendale, Callum Allardice and Daniel Millward allows its members to combine the tightly controlled power of a big band with the intimacy, playfulness and interaction of a small chamber jazz group. Intelligent and intricate, yet deeply grooving, this band is a must-see. The Jac has released two albums on Rattle Jazz; the first, Nerve, was a finalist for the Jazz Album of the Year in 2014. The second, The Green Hour, was released in October 2015, and met with consistent critical acclaim from reviewers as diverse as Graham Reid, Simon Sweetman, and William Dart. They have successfully toured to various parts of New Zealand including Auckland, Tauranga, Blenheim, Nelson, and Christchurch, and in 2014 completed a well-received tour of Australia, which, drawing on the teaching backgrounds of its members, included a masterclass at the Queensland Conservatorium.
